US
Administration Admits Pronunciation Blunder
Spelling Effects Policy Change, Affects
History
Sept. 22, 2003 — US Administrators
in Iraq have admitted that they misunderstood a Department of State
memo calling for "a more polished Administration."
The mis-reading has led to the establishment
of a new "Polish Quarter" in the Iraqi capital, and enlarged
powers for the Polish presence there, which accounts for the majority
of the Eastern European nation's armed forces and several of their
best kielbasa chefs.
“Our orders are printed all caps. We
felt certain they meant the nationality, not the level of poise
and preparedness,” said one US officer. “But once you
just offer someone a piece of Baghdad, well, it’s hard to
ask for it back without looking stupid.”
